Werner
Hartmann was born in Ansbach, Germany, on May 17, 1955; he is married
and lives close to Erlangen, Germany.
He is a member of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (German
Physical Society) and an Associate Member of the IEEE.
He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University
of Erlangen in 1981 and 1986, respectively. From 1986 to 1991, he
was a Research Associate at the University of Erlangen, working
on low-pressure gas discharge physics, pseudospark switches, and
fast compressional Z-pinches for soft X-ray lasers. As a post-doc,
he worked on the fundamentals of pseudospark switches at the USC
(University of So. California) in 1987/88.
He is a member of the Organizing Committee of the
German branch of the NPSS Chapter on Pulsed Power, a member of the
Overseas Attendance Committee of the Power Modulator Symposium,
and also a member of the Current Zero Club.
In 1991, he joined the Corporate Technology of Siemens
AG, at Erlangen, Germany. Since 1992, he is Project Manager of R&D
projects related to switching and pulsed power devices and applications.
His field of works includes low voltage switches, vacuum switching
tubes, pseudospark switches, shockwave transducers and applications,
and high voltage power modulators. He worked on several aspects
of flue gas cleaning, comprising conventionally energized and pulsed
Electrostatic Precipitators; plasma-chemical systems for NOx and
SOx reduction of flue gas; and mercury removal by plasma-assisted
oxidation systems. His experience comprises experiments towards
the fundamentals of physics in these processes on a laboratory scale,
as well as development and field testing of full-scale pulsed power
equipment. His current interests include equipment for low, medium
and high voltage power transmission and distribution, and pulsed
power generators and plasma reactors for flue gas cleaning and industrial
applications.
